Shoe sizes differ between the US, UK and EU systems, and the gap between men’s and women’s sizing differs again - which is why a straight number swap often goes wrong. A US men's 9 is a UK 8 and an EU 42. A US women's 8 is a UK 6 and an EU 39.
Shoe sizing has no single formula that converts cleanly across countries. It's three different measuring traditions layered on top of each other. US and UK sizes are both counted in barleycorns (an old English unit, ⅓ inch), but start counting from different points, which is why men's sizes run one full size apart and women's run two. EU sizing counts in Paris points (⅔ cm) on a completely different scale. Every brand's last shifts the fit slightly, so treat this as a reliable starting point, not a guarantee. When in doubt, go by foot length in cm.
